Absent Minded Talking

Absent Minded Talking

Have you ever talked nonstop with a friend, talk that seemed to be ok, and then realized your talk was not Christlike? Or have you ever agreed with someone/ gone along with the words of someone, who is bashing others? These are perfect examples of what is called absent minded talking: talking with a forgetful or inattentive disposition. I know I, myself, struggle with this on a daily basis, and maybe you, too, are dealing with this same problem. Well let me tell you friend, nobody is perfect, and everyone struggles with this at some point or another. This is just part of living in an imperfect world. God tells us in Ephesians 4:29, "Do not let any unwholesome talk come out of your mouths, but only what is helpful for building others up according to their needs, that it may benefit those who listen" The Lord's words perfectly remind us that we should only speak words that are HELPFUL to others, and will benefit those who listen. By putting others down, not only does it hurt us and our relationship with God, but in addition, it hurts the person who is listening. Next time you begin to notice useless words slip from your tongue, remind yourself to only speak the TRUTH, and ask yourself this question: do these words benefit others, and will God be proud or let down by these words? When you ask yourself these questions, we have the power to withstand the devil, and give God all the power. James 1:26 states that "Those who consider themselves religious and yet do not keep a tight rein on their tongues deceive themselves, and their religion is worthless" Listen to those words: their religion is WORTHLESS. When we spread false rumors, and speak words other than the truth, our religion becomes WORTHLESS. False accusations and words not only hurt us, but they become a bad example of what God calls us to do on this earth. When we speak against our brothers and sisters in Christ, we are also speaking against the law. Earlier this week, I was on a walk with the sweetest friend, and we began to talk about how we become hypocrites when we go against God's teachings. God does not tell us to spread his word, and then go our own way and deny it. No, instead God tells us to spread his word, and then go live it! We can not tell others what we believe an then go against our words. When we do this, our religion become worthless. I love these words in Proverbs 18:21, "The tongue has the power of life and death, and those who love it will eat its fruit" Our tongue can be a great deal of good or a great deal of evil. When we love our tongue and guard the words that flow from it, we will then prosper from the "fruit" (words) we eat. Remember, that our words influence others, and we, too, will face the consequences of our words. WE have the power to bring others to Christ, and when we are preaching the gospel, there is life in the power of our tongue! When you allow God to use you to spread the amazing new of salvation, you will then reap the blessing attached. Although there is no solution to foul talk, I do have one thing you can carry away with you today. Remain in God's words, and always remind yourself only to spread the good news! When we obey God's teachings and his laws, we will then find more joy and peace, and will be granted blessings from spreading the gospel.

Nobody's perfect, however, we are loved by a perfect God, and those who use their words to do a great deal of good will thrive with the Lord in this world of brokenness.
